Moss growing on a roof may or may not be considered attractive or quaint but there is no doubt that extensive moss on a roof can seriously damage the roof by growing under and raising or loosening.

The constant moisture can result in mold and bacteria growth. Because moss grows in moist humid areas it can also be a clear sign of water or moisture damage on the roof. Moss algae and lichen grow on your roof through a combination of two things. Dispense the moss killer in lines about 2 feet apart parallel to the roof ridge. Maintain a consistent flow of moss killer down the line. To apply dry powder moss killer place an extension ladder against the house and climb to the roof. When it rains moss will soak up water and retain it creating consistently wet conditions on your roof.

To apply wet moss killer attach the garden hose to the container. The roots then can lift up the shingles on the roof. The more water and the more debris the greater the chance of moss growth. This causes the roof to start degrading.

Hose off and brush all moss loose from your roof shingles. If you ignore it overtime moss will grow beneath your shingles and lead to more severe damage. Likewise moisture that is held by lichen or moss can freeze in cold weather and cause cracks in your roofing much like potholes that form in roads. In the case of cedar roofing a wet or moist roof can eventually lead to issues like rot mold and mildew.

Moss grows something known as rhizoids which basically act as roots. The moss will absorb the damp environment s moisture and establish roots on the roof. Moss thrives in damp moist areas including roofs that are north facing or shaded by trees. The presence or absence of much sunlight on a roof surface is often a determining factor in the amount of moss or lichens growth more sun less moss and lichens.

Severe moisture can even go through the roof and flashing and into the home where mold can continue to grow. Moss growth will also interfere with proper drainage of water off the roof as water needs to trickle through or around the moss instead of running straight down to the gutters.
